Inspect before wrapping

Strip the bedding and inspect both sides. Do not wrap a surface that is still damp after cleaning. If cleaning is needed, allow enough drying time and follow the care instructions. A cover that appears removable is not automatically washable or intended to be taken off. The label and guidance for the exact model should determine what you do.

Also check whether the mattress can be bent or stood on its side during transport. Foam, sprung and multi-part systems are not interchangeable. Delivery in a roll does not mean that a mattress can later be vacuum packed or rolled again at home.

Choose a correctly sized cover

Use a clean protective cover that accommodates the length, width and depth without compressing the mattress. Fit it on a clean surface and close it against dirt. Loose plastic must not trail on the ground or obstruct the carriers' view. A cover is not a lifting system unless it is explicitly designed for that purpose.

Keep the route into the home dry and clear places where the mattress might otherwise be dragged over an edge. Fabric handles may be intended only for positioning; check the manufacturer's instructions before putting weight through them. Arrange adequate help for large or awkward models.

Separate transport from storage

A position allowed for brief transport may not be suitable for extended storage. Ask the manufacturer if the mattress will not return to a bed that day. Support it as specified and avoid placing cartons on or against it in ways that create concentrated pressure. Protect it from sharp fittings on other furniture too.

Open the transport cover in a dry room after arrival and check for moisture. Put the mattress on its intended suitable support. Make the bed only once everything is dry and any product-specific acclimatisation instructions have been followed. Store the cover clean if it may be useful for another move.
