Remove only intended components

Unplug a portable lamp and let it cool before removing its shade and bulb according to the instructions. Permanently wired lighting is not an impromptu packing task; necessary electrical work belongs with an appropriately qualified person. Photograph the order of retaining rings and fittings before removing them. Keep small parts labelled together. Do not force a shade over a bracket whose fastening has not yet been released.

Protect the shade's structure

Handle delicate fabric or paper shades only at suitable firm points. Use clean material that will not transfer colour and keep adhesive tape off the surface. A dedicated box with adequate clearance protects more reliably than placing the shade between bedding and furniture parts. Cushioning must not dent its shape. Nest shades only where their form and material allow this without pressure or rubbing; otherwise, pack them separately.

Pack bases and bulbs apart

Give heavy bases sturdy, adequately cushioned boxes. Coil the cable loosely and secure it without pulling at its entry point or rubbing delicate surfaces. If bulbs may be removed, transport them in appropriate protective packaging and identify which lamp they belong to. Glass bases and ceramic bodies need the same attention as other fragile items; they should not sit loose beneath a shade that only appears protective.

Complete assembly before use

Unpack the shade in a clean area and remove every piece of packing from the lamp and its fittings. Assemble only compatible components according to the instructions. Inspect the cord and plug for visible damage; do not switch damaged parts on merely to test them. Set the lamp on a stable surface first. Keep spares separately and discard cushioning only after locating all rings, fittings and bulbs.
